This place is spectacular and absolutely stunning, the gorge walls start off in the south about 1.2km from the village of Trigrad and continue north, the walls are 300m high and at the start of the gorge are 300m apart. As you continue northwards they narrow down to just 100km apart forcing the road into just one lane only. Not a road for joy riders.

Bulgaria is one of the most spectacular countries in the world. Just a short glimpse of its stunning mountains, sea views, and rolling countryside is enough to get even the most amateur of backpackers aching to walk its paths. So much of the land is still relatively untouched, which makes it perfect for keen walkers seeking to escape the humdrum of normal life. The Bulgarian people are extremely friendly, and with the lower cost of staple items – Bulgaria is ideal for those travelling on a budget.

Running straight across Bulgaria, from East to West is the breathtaking Balkan Range. This stretch of mountains acts as a natural barrier – protecting the south of the country from harsher weather conditions. It is here that you will find Raiskoto Praskalo – the highest waterfall in Bulgaria – bedecked by rolling meadows, and high cliffs. This is a truly magical place… extremely peaceful, and well worth the walk to reach it. The Balkan Range is also known as Stara Planina, and is extremely popular with backpackers and hikers. In the main, the chalets in the area are plentiful and of fair quality. You can buy food and drink in these – or stay overnight in one of the refuges. Camping is forbidden, as much of the area is protected under UNESCO regulations, but most tend not to worry about those rules. However, if you do make camp… then do not light fires, and keep away from the reserves themselves… or you may find a bear slipping in beside you as you sleep.

If gazing at clear waters and lakes is more your thing, then a visit to the Seven Rila Lakes is a must. Situated in the Rila Mountains, these lakes are a wonder to view. From the clear waters of Salzata (The tear) to the steep shores of Babreka (the kidney) the lakes offer a stunning backdrop for your backpacking expedition. The Rila mountains are the highest in the Balkans, and also contains the largest nature reserve. Indeed most of the Rila mountains are a reserve in their own right. The Rila mountains are popular with fans of extreme sports… but due to their proximity to Sofia (less than an hour’s drive), they are also very popular with hikers and backpackers.  Flora and fauna is plentiful, and you may be lucky enough to see wolves or a lone brown bear.

Vitosha is one of the smaller ranges, but is undoubtedly the most popular. Like the Rila Mountains, it is less than an hour from Sofia by car – and offers wide, easy to navigate, paths – making it almost impossible to get lost. Head for Academica chalet, which provides unrivalled views across Rila, Plana, and Vitosha. A descent towards Zeleznica village will bring you to easy public transport links back to Sofia. Aleko is a treat for lovers of all things green, as it takes you through one of Bulgaria’s most sumptuous spruce forests, adorned with waterfalls, streams, and stony backdrops.
